Patna's High Court dates to 1916, established by Letters Patent of the British Crown out of territory that used to answer to Calcutta — making it one of the older chartered courts, predating most courts set up under the 1935 Government of India Act by nearly two decades. It briefly served the combined province of Bihar and Orissa before Orissa split off with its own court in 1948. Like Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, it's authorised to hear cases in Hindi, a status it's held since 1972.
