Meghalaya's High Court, like its Manipur and Tripura counterparts, opened in March 2013 after decades under Gauhati's wing. Its seat, Shillong, has its own bit of layered history: it used to be the capital of the whole of undivided Assam under British rule, long before Meghalaya existed as a separate state at all. The Court's docket regularly turns on something most Indian courts rarely touch — the customary, matrilineal law that governs land and inheritance among Meghalaya's indigenous communities, administered through autonomous district councils.
