Kerala's High Court opened the day the state itself was formed in 1956, replacing an even shorter-lived predecessor — the High Court of Travancore-Cochin, which had existed for barely seven years. What makes Kerala's court unusual today is a jurisdictional quirk: the same 1956 law that created it also handed it responsibility for the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, a scattering of islands in the Arabian Sea with no High Court of its own.
