Gauhati is what's left of an institution that used to cover almost the entire Indian north-east on its own. Established in 1948 as the "High Court of Assam," it once held jurisdiction over every state in the region; as Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura became states or gained enough population to need their own courts, most were carved away. What remains still spans four separate states — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram — held together through three permanent benches at Kohima, Aizawl and Itanagar, because no single seat could realistically serve all of them.
Jurisdiction Map: Covers Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram. Principal seat: Guwahati, Assam. It also reaches outlying parts of its territory through: Permanent Benches at Kohima (Nagaland) and Aizawl (Mizoram); permanent Bench at Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh).
Citation: Government of India Act 1935.
