Before 1966, if you had a High Court-level case in Delhi, you took it to the Punjab High Court, which was still based in Simla at the time — the national capital didn't have its own High Court. Delhi's court opened that year with just four judges. It's grown since, mostly because it now carries an outsized share of India's constitutional and public-interest litigation simply by virtue of sitting where the national government sits, and it built a dedicated Intellectual Property Division in 2021 after the country's old IP appellate tribunal was shut down.
