TLG OS Scan: use, privacy and limitations

Updated 24 October 2026 · Contact info@thelegalgazette.org

Run a scan

Save your manuscript in Writing Studio, open TLG OS Scan and choose local similarity, writing observations or both. Choose whether to exclude block quotations and sections headed References, Bibliography or Works Cited. Start the scan and follow its queue status. You may leave the page: saved jobs run on the server. Open a completed report to inspect passages, download its PDF or export evidence JSON. Submission still requires editorial approval.

What the results mean

Local similarity compares the saved body with a bounded corpus of other published TLG articles, not the entire internet or private drafts. The report identifies its revision, checked corpus, exclusions, skipped documents and matching passages. A missing corpus or insufficient text is unavailable, not a zero originality score. Common legal language and inline quotations can match. Separate footnotes and citation records are outside this comparison.

Writing observations are not AI detection

The local writing review uses deterministic patterns. It cannot determine human or AI authorship and does not generate an AI percentage. Similarity is not a finding of plagiarism. An editor must assess context, quotation, permission and attribution; authors may challenge a finding with evidence. No adverse decision should rest solely on an automated score.

Optional external processing

External provider checks are separate, disabled unless an administrator configures the provider, processing terms and budget, and require explicit per-check consent before transmitting the saved manuscript body. Declining does not stop local scanning. Provider coverage, pricing, retention and reliability depend on its terms. Do not submit confidential or third-party material without authority.

Storage and access

Production scan snapshots and reports are encrypted at rest using a private key stored outside public application files. Writers can access their own reports; authorised administrators can review them. Reports expire after 30 days and expired records are removed during processing. Downloads and backups already made are separate copies. Evidence checksums detect changes but are not digital signatures or proof of authorship.

Troubleshooting

A queued scan waits for the background worker; an interrupted job retries with a bounded retry limit. If it fails, check the displayed limits and contact support with the report ID, never a password. Administrators should inspect storage readiness, worker status and queue failures. An unavailable optional provider does not make local scanning unavailable.
