OpenNyAI: free software and models for reading Indian court judgments
OpenNyAI is an open-source mission that builds free tools, datasets and AI models so developers can create justice applications for India. It was created in 2021 by Agami, with EkStep, Thoughtworks, the National Law School of India University and Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies among its founding collaborators. For a non-programmer, the idea is a toolkit that reads a long judgment and pulls out the people and organisations named, the parts that do what (facts, arguments, ruling) and a short summary. The opennyai Python library bundles three such models trained on Indian court judgments, and the project also backs Jugalbandi, a free stack for conversational AI in Indian languages. Researchers have used it to turn piles of unstructured judgments into structured datasets. It needs some technical comfort to run, and an AI summary is a pointer to the judgment, never a replacement for reading it.
