India Code

The government's own bookshelf of every law it has ever passed

India Code is free, and it is the closest thing India has to a single shelf holding every Central Act since 1836, plus State Acts, arranged by year, ministry, or state. Think of it less as a search engine and more as an archive room: you go in knowing roughly what you want (the Indian Penal Code, say, or the 2023 data protection law), and it hands you the authenticated text, section by section, with amendment history attached. The August 2026 relaunch added AI-assisted and voice search, plus a slow rollout of translations into the Eighth Schedule languages, so a farmer in Odisha will eventually be able to search in Odia rather than English. The insider trick: use the state dropdown, not the general search box, if you want a specific state's amendments to a Central Act — general search often surfaces only the unamended Central version.
